아미다지의 주지
아미다지 주지란 「귀 없는 호이치 이야기」에서 호이치의 비파 솜씨와 이야기 재능을 아껴, 그를 절에 머물게 하며 생활을 돌봐 준 승려입니다.
호이치가 밤마다 몰래 나간다는 것을 알아챈 주지는 절의 일꾼들에게 뒤를 밟게 하고, 호이치가 헤이케의 망령에게 불려 가고 있다는 사실을 알게 됩니다. 이대로라면 호이치의 목숨이 위험하다고 여긴 주지는, 제자인 어린 승려와 함께 호이치의 온몸에 반야심경을 쓰고 '누가 불러도 절대 대답하지 말고, 움직이지도 말라'고 단단히 일렀습니다. 경문 덕분에 망령의 눈에는 호이치의 몸이 보이지 않게 되었지만, 귀에만 경문이 없었던 탓에 결국 귀를 빼앗기고 맙니다.
다음 날 아침 피를 흘리는 호이치를 발견한 주지는, 귀에 경문을 썼는지 확인하지 않은 자신의 잘못이라며 사과하고 의원을 불러 치료하게 했습니다. 제자인 어린 승려도 주지와 함께 경문을 쓴 인물로 등장합니다.
