About this site
Manga Portal turns myths, classics, legends and traditional stories from Japan and around the world into full-color manga, free to read with no sign-up, in Japanese, English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, Spanish and French. The site is operated by A-BET.
Why we make it
Manga is one of Japan's great cultural strengths. We want everyone in the world to be able to meet the stories that people have told for centuries, in a form that is easy and fun to read — for free.
How we make it and our editorial policy
- Sources: We check each story against public-domain originals (old editions published on the National Diet Library Digital Collections, Project Gutenberg and similar). We do not use modern translations or the art and designs of other manga, anime or films.
- Adaptation: Dialogue, emotional beats and period details are dramatized so the story reads well as manga. Each episode's article explains how it differs from the original.
- Technology: We use AI to help write scripts and draw pages. The operator chooses the stories, checks the rights and sets the editorial standards; every script is scored against those standards (clarity, natural dialogue, respect for the source) before it is published.
- Care: We aim to treat religions, cultures and historical figures with respect, and we avoid graphic violence and sexual content.
Articles
Every episode comes with an article covering the original story, its characters, its cultural and historical background, and what the manga changed.
