Who Is Admiral Croft?
The seafaring tenant of Kellynch Hall
Admiral Croft is the rear admiral in the Royal Navy who rents Kellynch Hall from the Elliot family. He fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and later served in the East Indies.
He is a frank, friendly man of the sea who settles the deal almost as soon as he comes to see the house. His wife is Captain Wentworth's sister, and this connection is what brings Wentworth into the neighborhood. Even when Sir Walter looks down on the navy, the admiral himself does not mind in the least and stays cheerful.
Jane Austen had two brothers who were naval officers, and it is often said that navy people like the Crofts are portrayed warmly in the novel for this reason.
