克罗夫特将军是租下埃利奥特家凯林奇府的海军少将。他参加过特拉法尔加海战，之后在东印度执行任务。
他一来看府邸，就爽快地谈妥了租约，是个直率又随和的海上男儿。他的妻子是温特沃斯上校的姐姐，正因为这层关系，上校才来到了附近。即使沃尔特爵士看不起海军，将军本人也毫不在意，性格十分开朗。
奥斯汀有两个兄弟是海军军官，据说正因如此，像将军夫妇这样的海军人物在书中都被写得很有好感。
