Qui est Amiral Croft (Admiral Croft) ?
Le marin qui loue Kellynch Hall
L'amiral Croft est le contre-amiral de la marine qui devient locataire de Kellynch Hall, le domaine des Elliot. Il a combattu à la bataille de Trafalgar, puis servi dans les Indes orientales.
Marin franc et chaleureux, il conclut l'affaire dès sa première visite du domaine. Son épouse est la sœur du capitaine Wentworth, et c'est par ce lien que le capitaine vient s'installer dans les environs. Sir Walter a beau mépriser la marine, l'amiral ne s'en offusque pas le moins du monde, avec une bonne humeur inaltérable.
Deux des frères de Jane Austen étaient officiers de marine, et l'on dit que c'est pourquoi les marins comme les Croft sont dépeints avec tant de sympathie dans le roman.
