Who Is Mrs. Sophia Croft (Mrs. Croft)?
Wentworth's sister, who sailed with her husband
Sophia Croft
Mrs. Sophia Croft is Admiral Croft's wife and Captain Frederick Wentworth's older sister. She is a brisk, sun-tanned woman who has sailed with her husband on many voyages.
For Anne, learning that she is "his sister" comes as a great shock. When her brother says he does not like having women on board his ship, Mrs. Croft fires back that women are rational creatures. She also notices when Anne is tired from walking and kindly invites her into the carriage.
Unusually for her time, she is portrayed as a woman who travels the seas as her husband's equal, and the Crofts show an ideal picture of marriage in the story.
