Who Is Oishi Kuranosuke Yoshio (Oishi Yoshio)?

Chief retainer who led the 47 Ronin

Oishi Kuranosuke was the chief retainer (karo) of the Asano house of Ako in Harima Province and the leader of the 47 Ronin, the masterless samurai who killed Lord Kira Kozuke-no-Suke to avenge their lord, Asano Takumi-no-Kami. Because he was easygoing and unremarkable in everyday life, he is said to have been nicknamed hiru-andon, the “daytime lantern.”

When news of his lord's seppuku reached Ako, he brought the retainers' views together and surrendered Ako Castle without fighting the shogunate's forces. He then lived in Yamashina near Kyoto, campaigning to restore the house with his lord's younger brother, Asano Daigaku, as its head, while also frequenting the pleasure quarters. When hope of restoration was lost, he decided on the attack at the Maruyama Conference, divorced his wife Riku, went down to Edo, and on the night of the 14th day of the twelfth month of Genroku 15 led the front-gate unit in the raid on Kira's mansion.

After the raid he was placed in the custody of the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto domain in Higo, and he committed seppuku on the 4th day of the second month of Genroku 16. In the play Kanadehon Chushingura he appears as Oboshi Yuranosuke. His carousing is often described as an act to hide his true intentions, but how much of it was calculated is not clear.
