프레더릭 웬트워스는 『설득』에서 앤의 상대역으로 등장하는 해군 장교입니다. 1806년 산토도밍고 앞바다 해전에서 세운 공으로 중령이 된 지 얼마 되지 않았을 때 앤을 만나 약혼했습니다.
당시 그에게는 재산도 힘 있는 친척도 없었고, 약혼은 앤 쪽에서 깨집니다. 화가 난 그는 바다로 돌아가 전쟁에서 공을 거듭 세워 대령이 되었고, 적의 배를 붙잡은 상금으로 재산을 모았습니다. 8년 뒤 누나인 크로프트 부인을 찾아 어퍼크로스에 나타나지만, 앤과는 가볍게 인사만 나눌 뿐 서먹하게 대합니다. 머스그로브 집안 자매들에게 둘러싸여 바다 이야기를 들려주며, 의지가 굳은 여성이 좋다고 말합니다.
