웬트워스 대령이 찾아오자 언니 헨리에타와 함께 그에게 푹 빠져 바다 이야기를 졸라 댑니다. 산책 도중 대령은 루이자의 굳은 의지를 칭찬하며, 나무에서 떨어지지 않고 남은 단단한 개암 열매에 빗대어 이야기합니다. 앤은 산울타리 너머에서 그 말을 듣게 됩니다.
