菲德烈·溫特沃斯是《勸導》中與女主角安對戲的海軍軍官。1806年，他因聖多明哥外海海戰的戰功剛升為海軍中校，就在那時認識了安並與她訂婚。
當時的他既沒有財產，也沒有有力的親戚，婚約最後由安這一方解除。憤怒的他回到海上，在戰爭中屢建戰功，升為上校，並靠著俘獲敵船的獎金累積了財富。八年後，他前往上克勞斯探望姊姊克勞夫特太太，與安見面時只是點頭致意，態度疏遠。他被默斯格羅夫家的姊妹包圍，講述海上的故事，還表示自己喜歡意志堅強的女性。
