華特·艾略特爵士是安的父親，薩默塞特郡凱林奇莊園的主人，身分是準男爵。他最引以為傲的就是自己的外貌和家世，唯一愛讀的書是記載著自家名號的準男爵名錄。
即使奢侈的生活讓債務越滾越多，他也不肯接受減少馬匹或僕人之類的節約方法。在律師謝伯德先生巧妙的引導下，他決定把莊園租出去，搬到巴斯生活。聽說承租人是海軍將領時，他看不起海軍，認為那是「讓出身低微的人往上爬、還會把臉曬壞」的行業，但最後還是把莊園交給了對方。
