Psyche's jealous older sister
The Eldest Sister is the older of Psyche's two sisters; she is never given a name in the original text. She is of ordinary beauty and married a king from another land before her younger sister did.
In the story, she comes looking for her missing sister and is carried by the West Wind to the golden palace. Seeing Psyche's luxurious life fills her with envy, and she complains that her own husband is "older than our father, balder than a pumpkin, and shorter than a child." Teaming up with the other sister, she notices inconsistencies in Psyche's stories, suspects the husband is no ordinary being, and tells Psyche that he is really a huge serpent who will one day devour her.
The two sisters are the villains who try to destroy Psyche's happiness. Because Psyche truly loves her sisters, their betrayal becomes a major turning point in the story.
