Who Is Eros (Cupid) (Amor)?

The winged god of love

Cupid

Eros is the god of love in Greek mythology and the son of Venus (Aphrodite), the goddess of love and beauty. The Romans called him Cupid or Amor, and the English name "Cupid" comes from the Latin Cupido. He has wings and is said to make people and gods fall in love with his arrows.

He first appears when his mother orders him to make Psyche fall in love with the most wretched man in the world. Later he lives with Psyche as the unseen husband who visits the palace only at night, never revealing who he is. Again and again he warns her: "Do not try to find out what I look like," and "Beware of your sisters."

Because The Golden Ass was written in Latin, the god is called Cupid or Amor in the original text. Later in the story, he himself reveals that he defied his mother's command and made Psyche his own wife.
