큰언니란?
동생의 행복을 시기하는 맏언니
큰언니는 프시케의 두 언니 가운데 손위인 인물로, 원전에는 이름이 나오지 않습니다. 평범한 아름다움을 지녔으며, 동생보다 먼저 다른 나라의 왕과 결혼했습니다.
이야기에서는 소식이 끊긴 동생을 찾아왔다가 서풍에 실려 황금 궁전을 방문합니다. 동생의 호화로운 생활을 보고 시기심에 사로잡혀, 자기 남편은 「아버지보다 나이가 많고, 머리는 벗겨졌으며, 아이보다 키가 작다」고 불평합니다. 이윽고 작은언니와 손을 잡고, 동생의 말이 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 것을 보고 남편이 예사로운 존재가 아니라고 의심하여 「네 남편의 정체는 거대한 뱀이고, 언젠가 너를 잡아먹을 것이다」라고 프시케에게 속삭입니다.
두 언니는 프시케의 행복을 무너뜨리려는 이야기의 악역입니다. 프시케가 언니들을 진심으로 따르기 때문에, 그 배신은 이야기의 큰 전환점이 됩니다.
