프시케를 실어 나르는 서풍의 신
제피로스
제피로스는 그리스 신화의 서풍의 신으로, 봄을 실어 오는 부드러운 바람으로 여겨집니다. 라틴어로는 제피루스, 영어로는 제퍼라고 부릅니다.
이야기에서는 산의 바위 위에서 떨고 있는 프시케를, 옷자락을 부풀려 부드럽게 들어 올린 뒤 골짜기의 꽃밭 위에 내려놓습니다. 그 뒤로는 남편의 명령에 따라, 동생을 만나러 온 언니들을 바위산에서 궁전까지 실어 나르는 역할도 맡습니다. 언니들이 여러 번 궁전을 찾아올 수 있었던 것은 이 서풍 덕분이었습니다.
원전의 제피로스는 말을 하지 않고, 오로지 실어 나르는 역할만 합니다. 이 「바람에 실려 간다」는 장치는 이야기 후반에서도 중요한 의미를 지니게 됩니다.
