Who Is Uther Pendragon (King Uther)?
The former king and Arthur's true father
Uther Pendragon is King Arthur's true father and the king who ruled Britain before him. "Pendragon" is said to be a title meaning "chief dragon" or "head of the dragons."
In the flashback in Episode 1, he falls in love with Igraine, wife of the Duke of Tintagel, and enters her castle after Merlin's magic gives him the Duke's appearance. In return, he promises to give Merlin the child that will be born. After the Duke dies in battle, Uther makes Igraine his queen, but their newborn son Arthur is taken by Merlin as promised. On his deathbed, urged by Merlin, Uther names Arthur his heir and gives him his blessing.
The mystery surrounding Arthur's rise to the throne, and the reason Arthur grew up not knowing his own birth, all begin with this promise made by his father.
