Who Is Sir Kay (Cai)?
Arthur's foster brother and the king's seneschal
Sir Kay is King Arthur's foster brother, a Knight of the Round Table who later became the king's seneschal (the officer who runs the royal household). He is the true son of Sir Ector, the knight who raised Arthur.
In Episode 1, newly knighted, he plans to fight in a tournament in London but leaves his sword behind at the inn. When Arthur brings him the sword from the stone instead, Kay at first tells his father that he pulled it out himself, but under questioning he admits the lie. This forgotten sword is what leads Arthur to the throne. Granting his foster father's wish, Arthur makes Kay his seneschal.
In most versions of the legend, Kay is portrayed as a sharp-tongued, sarcastic knight. He also appears in old Welsh tales under the name "Cai" and is considered one of Arthur's oldest companions.
