Who Is Morgause (Margawse)?
Arthur's sister and the mother of Mordred
Morgause is the wife of King Lot of Orkney and King Arthur's half-sister. She is the daughter of Igraine and the Duke of Tintagel, and the mother of Gawain, Gaheris, Agravain, and Gareth.
In Episode 2, she comes to court as her husband's messenger, but her real purpose is to spy on Arthur's court. Neither knowing that they are sister and brother, she spends a night with Arthur and conceives Mordred. Merlin learns of this and prophesies that the child will one day destroy Arthur and the knights of his realm.
In Malory's original text her name is spelled "Margawse," and she is often called simply "King Lot's wife." Her sons become Knights of the Round Table and play major roles in the later stories.
