Who Is The Lady of the Lake?
The mysterious maiden who gave Arthur Excalibur
The Lady of the Lake is the mysterious woman living in a lake who gave King Arthur the holy sword Excalibur. She holds the magic of the lake and appears in many episodes of the Arthurian legend.
In Episode 2, after Arthur loses his sword fighting King Pellinore, Merlin takes him to a lake. An arm holding a sword rises from the water, and the maiden, coming across the lake as if walking on it, gives him the sword and scabbard in exchange for his promise to grant her one gift of her choosing someday. In Episode 3, she comes to court to claim that promise and demands the head of the knight Balin. But Balin, who blames her for his mother's death, cuts off her head on the spot.
"Lady of the Lake" is not just one person's name; it is also used as a title for the maidens who live in the lake. In Malory's stories, Nimue is counted as one of them.
