Balin's brother, who fought him unknowing
Balan is the younger brother of Balin, "the Knight with the Two Swords," and a knight who fought alongside him.
In Episode 3, he and his brother Balin join forces to capture King Rience, winning glory for King Arthur. Later, bound by a custom that forces him to fight every knight who passes, he becomes the guardian of a castle on an island. His brother arrives there carrying an unfamiliar shield given to him by the people of the castle, and the two brothers fight without recognizing each other.
Both are mortally wounded, and only when they remove their helmets do they realize they are brothers. They agree, "We came from one mother, so let us lie in one grave," and die together. This ending is known as one of the saddest scenes in the Arthurian legend.
