Who Is Prince Oshikuma (Oshikuma no Miko)?
The rebel prince who challenged Empress Jingu
Oshikuma-no-Miko
Prince Oshikuma is the son of Emperor Chuai and Onakatsuhime, and a half-brother of Emperor Ojin (Homudawake). He rebelled against Empress Jingu and her son.
He and his elder brother Kagosaka lay in wait for the empress and her son, but during a ritual hunt held to divine the outcome of the fight, Kagosaka was attacked and killed by a huge boar. Undaunted, Oshikuma advanced and attacked the funeral ship, only to be struck back by soldiers hidden aboard. Then the empress's general, Takefurukuma, pretended to surrender and cut his bowstrings; when Oshikuma's side put away their weapons, the general strung spare bowstrings hidden in his hair and attacked. Cornered, Prince Oshikuma exchanged songs with his general Isahi no Sukune, and together they threw themselves into the waters of Lake Omi (Lake Biwa).
His final song expresses the feeling: "Rather than be wounded by Furukuma, let me dive like a grebe into the waters of the Omi sea."
