Who Is Fujiwara no Hidehira?
Lord of Hiraizumi who protected Yoshitsune
Fujiwara no Hidehira is the third head of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan, which ruled northeastern Japan from its base at Hiraizumi. He controlled gold-producing lands and held great power.
He welcomes the young Yoshitsune to Hiraizumi and raises him under his protection. When Yoshitsune rushes off to join Yoritomo's uprising, Hidehira sends the brothers Satō Tsuginobu and Tadanobu with him as retainers. When the hunted Yoshitsune flees to Hiraizumi again, Hidehira takes him in, and on his deathbed he tells his sons to make Yoshitsune their commander and stand ready against Kamakura.
His son Yasuhira breaks this last wish, and Yoshitsune meets his end at Koromogawa. The remains of four generations of the Ōshū Fujiwara lie in the Konjikidō (Golden Hall) of Chūson-ji temple in Hiraizumi.
