Who Is Kajiwara Kagetoki (Kajiwara no Kagetoki)?
The slanderer who drove the brothers apart
Kajiwara Heizō Kagetoki
Kajiwara Kagetoki is a retainer of Minamoto no Yoritomo who slandered Yoshitsune to Yoritomo.
He joins Yoshitsune's army in the war against the Taira, but clashes with him over how to fight and is said to have held a grudge. His slander is what first makes Yoritomo suspect Yoshitsune, and it is the reason Yoshitsune is stopped at Koshigoe and not allowed into Kamakura.
The story of his argument with Yoshitsune before the Battle of Yashima over whether to fit the ships with "reverse oars" (sakaro) is told in The Tale of the Heike. After Yoritomo's death, Kagetoki came into conflict with the other Kamakura vassals, was driven out of Kamakura, and was killed.
