Who Is Grand Counselor Ōtomo no Miyuki (Otomo no Miyuki)?
The counselor caught in a storm hunting a dragon's jewel
Ōtomo no Miyuki is one of the five noble suitors of Princess Kaguya, a nobleman holding the rank of Grand Counselor. She asked him to bring the jewel that shines in five colors from a dragon's neck.
Ōtomo gave his retainers money and supplies and ordered them to fetch the jewel, but they simply ran off. Losing patience, he set out to sea on a ship himself. He was caught in a violent storm, and when the helmsman told him the dragon was raising the wind because he was trying to kill it, he trembled with fear and prayed to the gods. At last he washed ashore at the beach of Akashi, his face badly swollen and his appearance pitiful.
Back in the capital, Ōtomo gave up on Kaguya and began speaking ill of her. The tale says that the people who laughed at him gave rise to the expression "ana, taegata" ("how unbearable").
