Who Is The Burglar?

A thief who's good at "pretending to steal"

Burglar (Dakudaku)

The Burglar is the thief in the classic rakugo tale Dakudaku, who is fooled by painted furniture and then delivers the story's all-important punchline.

In Episode 4, he sneaks into a tenement at night and is thrilled to see such fine furnishings, until he reaches for a drawer and discovers it's a painting on the wall. After getting angry, he decides, "Then I'll pretend to steal it," and acts out wrapping things in a cloth bundle and hoisting it on his back. When the tenant says, "I pretend to stab you in the side with my spear," the burglar clutches his side and replies, "I pretend the blood is gushing out, daku-daku," ending the story. The title Dakudaku, a Japanese word for gushing blood, comes from this punchline.
