Who Is The Lithuanian Horse (The Half Horse)?
The horse that keeps running after losing its back half
The Lithuanian Horse is a swift young thoroughbred given to the Baron by Count Przobossky. It has no name in the original story and is best known for living on after losing its back half.
No one could ride this wild horse until the Baron leapt onto its back in a single bound and tamed it. He jumped it through a window into a tearoom and put it through its paces on the tea table without breaking a single piece of the tea set. The horse then carried him to war against the Turks. While chasing the enemy through a gate in the town of Ochakov, it was cut in two by a falling portcullis. When it drank at a well, the water simply poured out behind it, and only then did the Baron realize the back half was missing.
A farrier sewed the two halves together with a laurel branch that happened to be at hand. The branch took root and grew, eventually spreading enough to shade the Baron as he rode.
