Who Is Kitahachi (Kita) (Kita-san)?

The reckless but lovable young sidekick

Kitahachi

Kitahachi is the other hero of Shank's Mare (Tokaidochu Hizakurige), the young companion who travels with Yajirobei. He is widely known as "Kita-san." Once a traveling actor named Hananosuke, he came to Edo from Fuchu in Suruga Province together with Yaji. In Edo he worked in service at a shop, but a blunder left him unable to stay there.

With nowhere left to go, Kita sets off with Yaji on a pilgrimage to Ise. At the inn in Odawara, he copies Yaji by getting into the goemon bath in wooden clogs, and he stamps right through the bottom of the cauldron. At the inn in Mishima he gets caught up in a commotion over a soft-shelled turtle, and in Mariko he misses out on tororo soup. Reckless and greedy for food, he is always getting carried away and paying for it.

He and Yaji play pranks on each other and never stop bickering, yet they keep traveling together. Their back-and-forth banter is the greatest pleasure of the whole work.
