Who Is Kataoka Gengoemon Takafusa (Kataoka Takafusa)?
Close attendant who saw his lord off
Kataoka Gengoemon was a personal attendant (sobayonin) who served close to Lord Asano Takumi-no-Kami and enjoyed his lord's deep trust. He is said to have been about the same age as his lord, and he later became one of the 47 Ronin.
The Tamon Denpachiro Oboegaki records that before Asano committed seppuku at the mansion of Tamura Ukyo-no-Daibu, Kataoka was allowed one last look at his lord to see him off. However, doubts have been raised about the reliability of this memoir, and it is not certain that it happened as described.
After his lord's death he joined the comrades sworn to revenge, took part in the raid, and then committed seppuku.
