Who Is Wind-Following Ear (Shunfeng Er)?
Heaven's far-hearing guardian
Shunfeng'er (Wind-Following Ear)
Wind-Following Ear is a god who can hear sounds from far away. In Journey to the West he is one of two officers serving the Jade Emperor, appearing as a pair with Thousand-Mile Eye.
When the stone monkey is born and its golden light reaches all the way to Heaven, he and Thousand-Mile Eye survey the world below from the Southern Gate of Heaven and report the stone monkey to the Jade Emperor.
Like Thousand-Mile Eye, he is also worshipped as a guardian attendant of Mazu, the sea goddess. "Shunfeng" means "following the wind," referring to sounds carried to him on the wind.
