Who Is Poseidon (Neptune)?
God of the sea and earthquakes
Poseidon is the Greek god of the sea and earthquakes, and one of the Twelve Olympians. A brother of Zeus, king of the gods, he is famous for carrying a trident.
In this story, he answers the prayer of his son Polyphemus. Blinded, Polyphemus begs his father that Odysseus never reach home, or, if he must, that he arrive late, lose all his companions, come on someone else's ship, and find trouble waiting in his house. From then on, Poseidon becomes the great enemy blocking Odysseus's voyage.
He is identified with the Roman god Neptunus, known in English as Neptune, which is also the source of the planet Neptune's name.
