Who Is Agamemnon?
The Greek commander betrayed by his wife
Agamemnon is the king of Mycenae and the commander-in-chief of the Greek army in the Trojan War. He is the elder brother of Menelaus, king of Sparta.
In this story, his ghost appears before Odysseus in the Underworld. He tells, with bitter regret, how on the very day he returned home in victory, he was murdered at a feast by Aegisthus, who had joined forces with his wife Clytemnestra. He then advises Odysseus that his wife Penelope is wise and faithful, but that he should still land in his homeland in secret.
The tragedies of Agamemnon's family became widely known through later works such as Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy.
