Who Is Ninsun?
Gilgamesh's wise goddess mother
Ninsun is a goddess and the mother of Gilgamesh. Known as the "Wild Cow" goddess, she is portrayed as wise and all-knowing. Her husband is said to be Lugalbanda, a king of Uruk.
In Episode 2, in the palace of Uruk, she listens to two dreams her son Gilgamesh has had: one of a heavy lump falling from the sky, and one of an axe. Ninsun explains that they mean a friend as strong as Gilgamesh himself is coming. She tells him he will love this friend like a wife, and that the friend will save him again and again. That friend is Enkidu, coming from the wilderness.
Dreams play an important role in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and Ninsun is the one who interprets them. Later, when her son sets out on a dangerous journey, she prays to the sun god Shamash to protect him.
