Who Is Garlon?
The invisible knight who strikes unseen
Garlon is the "invisible knight" who attacks other knights while unseen. He is the younger brother of King Pellam of Listeneise.
In Episode 3, he rides up without being seen and runs through Sir Herlews from behind with a spear — a knight Balin had promised to protect and was escorting. He had killed many other knights in the same way. To avenge them, Balin slips into a feast at King Pellam's castle. In the original text, Garlon, now sitting there in plain sight, strikes Balin in the face, and the angry Balin cuts him down on the spot.
This single sword stroke provokes the fury of his brother King Pellam and leads to Balin's "Dolorous Stroke." Garlon is the person whose death sets Balin's tragedy fully in motion.
