Who Is Poseidon?
God of the sea and earthquakes
Poseidon is the god of the sea in Greek mythology, and also the god of earthquakes who shakes the earth. A son of Cronus and Rhea and an older brother of Zeus, he is one of the Olympian gods. In Roman mythology he corresponds to Neptune.
In the Theogony, he is born as Rhea's fifth child and second son, and is swallowed at once by his father Cronus. Later, when Zeus's cunning and strength force Cronus to vomit up his children, Poseidon comes out into the world. In Episode 4, he is described as "the Dark-haired One" who lies with Medusa in a flowering meadow.
He is known for carrying a trident. The story that he, Zeus, and Hades drew lots to divide the world, with the sea falling to him, appears in Homer's Iliad.
