Who Is Hesiod?
The poet who sang the Theogony
Hesiod was an ancient Greek poet who lived around 700 BC. He is credited as the author of the Theogony, which sings of the birth of the gods, and Works and Days, a poem about farming and everyday life. Alongside Homer, he is known as one of the earliest Greek poets.
At the beginning of the Theogony, Hesiod tells how the Muses spoke to him while he was tending lambs at the foot of Mount Helicon, and gave him a laurel staff and a divine voice. In this manga, too, he is the one who receives the Muses' song, and he frames the whole series.
He came from Ascra, a village in Boeotia in central Greece. In Works and Days he also tells of his quarrel with his brother Perses.
