Who Is Pegasus (Pegasos)?

Winged horse who carries Zeus's thunder

Pegasus is the flying horse of Greek mythology. When the hero Perseus cut off Medusa's head, Pegasus sprang from it together with Chrysaor.

The Theogony explains that he got his name because he was born beside the springs (pegai) of Oceanus. Right after his birth he left the earth and flew to the immortal gods, and he lives in the house of Zeus, carrying thunder and lightning for him. He is also said to have slain the monster Chimera together with the hero Bellerophon.

He is usually shown as a winged horse, and his name lives on in the constellation Pegasus in the autumn night sky.
