Who Is the Mighty Spirit God (Juling Shen)?

Heaven's vanguard whose axe was broken

Juling Shen

The Mighty Spirit God (Juling Shen) is a giant god from Chinese mythology. In Journey to the West he leads the vanguard of the heavenly army commanded by Heavenly King Li, the Pagoda Bearer.

Attacking the Water Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, he swings a huge axe and announces himself to Wukong. But with a single blow of the As-You-Will Staff, Wukong snaps the axe handle in two, and the god barely escapes with his life.

He was originally said to be a god of great strength who split a mountain with his hands to let the Yellow River flow through. The fact that such a god loses in one blow shows just how strong Wukong is.

Furious, he goes home to Flower-Fruit Mountain and names himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. He drives off Heaven's army, and Nezha is the first to call him by that name. But what Heaven finally gives him is a rank with a big name and nothing else.
