Who Is the Barefoot Immortal (Chijiao Daxian)?

The Barefoot Immortal is an immortal known for going barefoot. In Journey to the West he appears as one of the guests invited to the Peach Banquet.

On his way to the Jade Pool he meets Wukong, who lies to him that the Jade Emperor wants the guests to rehearse their ceremonies at the Hall of Perfect Light before the banquet, so he turns back. Wukong then takes on the Barefoot Immortal's appearance, slips into the banquet, and devours the food and wine.

In China there is a legend that Emperor Renzong of the Song dynasty was a reincarnation of the Barefoot Immortal, and this story appears at the opening of the novel Water Margin.
