Who Is Tataka (Tadaka)?
The demoness who terrorizes the forest
Tataka is a rakshasi, a female rakshasa (demon), in the Ramayana. She is a monster who ravages the forest and terrifies the people living nearby, and she is also the mother of the demon Maricha.
According to the sage's account, she was originally the daughter of Suketu, a yaksha (a race of forest spirits), and was a beautiful and powerful woman. After her husband Sunda died, she and her son attacked the sage Agastya, who cursed her into the form of a terrifying demon. In Episode 1, she is the first real opponent Rama faces in battle.
In the original epic, Rama hesitates to kill a woman. But Vishvamitra tells him it is permitted when it is done to protect people, and Rama finally slays Tataka. Having witnessed this victory, the sage grants Rama divine weapons.
