Who Is Hayashi Mimasaka-no-kami (Hayashi Michitomo)?

The senior retainer's brother killed by Nobunaga at Ino

Hayashi Mimasaka-no-kami was the younger brother of Hayashi Sado-no-kami (Hidesada), a senior retainer of the Oda clan of Owari, and a warrior who joined his brother in rebelling on behalf of Nobunaga's younger brother, Kanjuro. His given name is said to have been Michitomo. He was killed at the Battle of Ino in 1556.

The Shinchō Kōki tells how, when Nobunaga visits Sado-no-kami, Mimasaka-no-kami urges his brother to seize the chance and make Nobunaga cut his belly open. Sado-no-kami stops him, saying he cannot do that to a lord his family has served for three generations. The brothers later raise troops on Kanjuro's side. At the Battle of Ino, Mimasaka-no-kami leads some seven hundred men, but he fights Nobunaga, is thrust down, and loses his head.

His brother Sado-no-kami, meanwhile, was pardoned by Nobunaga after the battle and went on serving the Oda clan for many years. Two brothers joined the same rebellion, and their fates clearly parted ways.
