Who Is Takemikazuchi (Takefutsu-no-Kami)?
The god of thunder and swords who demanded the land
Takemikazuchi-no-O-no-Kami
Takemikazuchi (Takemikazuchi-no-O-no-Kami) is a warrior god in the Kojiki with the power of thunder and the sword. He is one of the gods born from the blood on Izanagi's sword when Izanagi killed the fire god Kagutsuchi.
The gods of heaven sent him as their third messenger to make Okuninushi hand over the land. Landing with Ame-no-Torifune on the beach of Inasa in Izumo, he stuck his sword upside down in the waves, sat cross-legged on its tip, and demanded, "Will you give up this land?" Okuninushi's son Kotoshironushi agreed to hand it over, but another son, Takeminakata, challenged him to a contest of strength. Takemikazuchi turned his own hand into a pillar of ice and then into a sword blade, crushed Takeminakata's hand like a young reed, threw him aside, and chased him all the way to the sea of Suwa until he surrendered.
He is enshrined at Kashima Jingū in Ibaraki Prefecture. In the second volume of the Kojiki, he also sends down a sword to help Emperor Jimmu.
