Who Is Hoderi (Umisachihiko) (Umisachihiko)?

The fisherman elder brother, ancestor of the Hayato

Hoderi-no-Mikoto

Hoderi (Hoderi-no-Mikoto) is a god in the Kojiki, the eldest son of Ninigi and Konohana-no-Sakuyabime, also known as Umisachihiko, "the Luck of the Sea." He was born inside the hall his mother set on fire, at the moment the flames burned most fiercely.

He lived by catching fish in the sea, but when his younger brother Hoori (Yamasachihiko) begged him to trade tools, the brother lost his fishhook. Even when his brother broke his sword and made a thousand hooks from it, Hoderi refused them and kept demanding, "Give me back my own hook." But when his brother returned from the sea palace, Hoderi was put under the sea god's curse and grew poor. When he attacked, his brother nearly drowned him using the jewels that controlled the tides, and at last he surrendered and swore to guard his brother day and night.

The Kojiki names him as the ancestor of the Ata clan of the Hayato, a people of southern Kyushu. It says this story is why the Hayato served the imperial court by acting out the motions of a drowning man.
