Who Is Ki'ichi Hōgen (Kiichi Hogen)?
Kyoto diviner who guarded a secret book of strategy
Ki'ichi Hōgen is a diviner-priest (onmyōji) living at Ichijō Horikawa in Kyoto in the Gikeiki, who keeps the Rikutō (the Six Secret Teachings), a book of military strategy brought from China.
Yoshitsune gets himself into Hōgen's house to read the book. Hōgen looks down on the young man of unknown origins, then grows suspicious and orders his disciple Tankai to kill him. But Hōgen's daughter warns Yoshitsune of the plot, and Tankai is killed instead. With the daughter's help, Yoshitsune reads the book and masters its strategy.
The Japanese word tora no maki ("tiger scroll"), meaning a book of secrets or a crib sheet, is said to come from the "Tiger" chapter of the Rikutō. He also inspired the kabuki play Kiichi Hōgen Sanryaku no Maki.
