Who Is Shimizu Ichigaku?
Kira retainer who died defending his lord
Shimizu Ichigaku was a young retainer of Lord Kira Kozuke-no-Suke who fought the Ako ronin on the night of the raid and was killed in the fighting.
The raid came in the middle of the night, and many of Kira's retainers were attacked in their sleep. Some could not even get out because their doors were held shut, but Ichigaku took up his sword, stood against the ronin, and lost his life.
Storytellers and novelists often portray him as a master swordsman, and he is remembered as an example of another kind of loyalty: fighting for his own lord.
