Who Is King Siggeir (Siggeirr)?
The king of Gautland who hides a grudge
King Siggeir is the king of Gautland in the Saga of the Volsungs and the husband of Signy, King Volsung's daughter. In the first part of the saga, he stands as the great enemy of the Volsung family.
He comes to King Volsung's hall to marry Signy. That night, everyone tries to pull out the sword the one-eyed old man left in the tree, starting with those of highest rank, so Siggeir goes first, and fails. When Sigmund draws the sword, Siggeir tries to buy it for three times its weight in gold, but is laughed off. He keeps a calm face, yet inside he burns with resentment, and he returns home plotting revenge.
