Who Is Akechi Mitsuhide (Akechi Jubei)?

The chief retainer behind the Honnoji Incident

Akechi Jubei Mitsuhide

Akechi Mitsuhide was one of Nobunaga's chief retainers and the warlord who killed his own lord in the Honnoji Incident of 1582. Little is known about his younger days before he entered Nobunaga's service. He is also known as one of the people who acted as a link between Ashikaga Yoshiaki and Nobunaga.

In Episode 9, after the burning of Mount Hiei, Nobunaga grants him Shiga District, and he settles at Sakamoto in Omi. He is known for gaining a position like that of a castle-holding lord especially early among Nobunaga's retainers, and Sakamoto Castle later became an important base for him.

Why he carried out the Honnoji Incident remains unclear, with many theories, including a grudge, ambition, and the involvement of other figures. After the coup he lost to Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the Battle of Yamazaki and is said to have died while fleeing.
