Who Is The Mosquito Spirit?
A mosquito spirit disguised as a sumo wrestler
Ka no Sei
The Mosquito Spirit is a supernatural being from the kyogen play Kazumo, a mosquito that has taken human form. To drink all the human blood it wants, it appears claiming to be a sumo wrestler from Moriyama in Omi Province (also called Goshu). Moriyama is around today's Moriyama City in Shiga Prefecture, and the story describes it as a place famous for mosquitoes.
In Episode 4, it approaches Taro Kaja, who is out looking for a new retainer, and gets hired by the daimyo. In the middle of a sumo match it reveals its true form, stabbing the daimyo with the needle on its mouth and sucking his blood. But it is weak against wind: in the next bout, Taro Kaja fans it with a giant fan until it weakens and flees.
On stage, the role is sometimes performed wearing a mask with pursed lips called usofuki.
